RESEARCH AREAS

-Generation of functional insulin-producing cells from progenitor and stem cells: differentiation, gene expression,

-metabolism, glucose sensing and responsiveness, in vivo survival and functionality (transplantation) in diabetic animals.

-Biology/physiology/pathology of islet beta-cells, including signaling mechanisms for insulin secretion, control of beta-cell growth and death, role of G-proteins and GTP in beta-cells, toxicity of inflammatory cytokines to beta-cells.

-Pathogenesis of dysfunctional vascular endothelial cells in diabetes, in particular the effects of high glucose and high fatty acids on nitric production and relevant signal transduction in endothelial cells.
