NUCLEAR RECEPTORS, ROS & CANCER BIOLOGY
TRAIL (TNF-Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand) is a promising anti-cancer drug due to its selectivity in targeting tumor cells leaving normal cells largely unaffected. However, these transformed cells can be TRAIL resistant or moderately sensitive to TRAIL. Hence, identifying small molecule drugs which can sensitize or enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to TRAIL is of great interest and tremendous use. A previous study in our lab has shown that hydrogen peroxide is an anti-oncogenic Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which can act as an upstream signalling molecule for the induction of apoptosis. My project includes understanding the role of ROS in the regulation of Death Receptors and elucidating the molecular mechanism of drug induced enhancement of TRAIL mediated apoptosis in tumor cells.
